Navigating its shifting architecture and defeating its guardians is key to uncovering valuable treasures and progressing the narrative, a testament to the game's enduring depth years after its initial release.

The Initial Ascent: Regular Carian Study Hall

Upon first entering the hall, players find a Site of Grace and a spectral figure. The primary path leads to an elevator. At the top, caution is advised. To the right, a Golden Rune (3) awaits, but it is guarded by Fingercreepers and spawning spirits. The left path triggers the appearance of the primary antagonist of this area, Preceptor Miriam. This sorcerer will harass players with spells while they contend with other spectral enemies. The chase leads up stairs, across a bridge, and to another staircase where the Carian Glintstone Staff can be claimed.

Continuing up a second elevator brings players to a balcony. A Golden Rune (4) is tucked down the right side of the entryway. The real challenge, however, is on the left, where Miriam reappears alongside spirits. A ladder here ascends to a network of beams crisscrossing the ceiling. Navigating these carefully—mindful of rats—and turning right at the third intersection leads to another ladder. At the top, on an adjacent beam, lies the valuable Cerulean Seed Talisman.

The Persistent Preceptor

Preceptor Miriam is a formidable foe, teleporting and casting spells relentlessly. Notably, she will respawn in the inverted version of the study hall even if defeated in the regular state, offering players two separate rewards. Defeating her in the regular tower grants the Magic Downpour sorcery, while victory in the inverted tower yields Lucidity. Strategic positioning can neutralize her threat; in the regular tower, standing in the small room at the top of the second elevator often prevents her from attacking. With the main area explored, the true secret of the Carian Study Hall requires a special key item.

Flipping the Script: The Inverted Study Hall

At the entrance sits a pedestal. Progressing through Ranni the Witch's questline rewards players with the Carian Inverted Statue. Placing this statue on the pedestal performs a dramatic transformation, turning the entire tower upside down. The entrance room remains stable, but the paths beyond are radically altered. The elevator is now inoperable, requiring players to jump and drop through the new, inverted architecture.

The journey through the inverted hall is perilous. After navigating past initial Fingercreepers, Preceptor Miriam will spawn on a distant platform and resume her magical assault. The recommended path involves turning left, hugging a wall, and carefully dropping onto ledges below to approach her position, all while avoiding her spells and dealing with additional Fingercreepers and Spirits. The environment itself becomes a puzzle.

From Miriam's platform, players must look down and perform a series of precise jumps onto chandeliers. One chandelier holds a Glintstone Firefly. The final drop lands on a large central platform with an elevator button. This elevator descends to a circular room. The exit is an inverted door leading onto a long bridge—the path to the Divine Tower of Liurnia. Activating the Site of Grace here is crucial before proceeding.

The Bridge Guardian and Tower Rewards

The bridge is not a safe passage. As players cross (mounting Torrent is possible here), a Godskin Noble miniboss spawns to block the way. This recurring enemy uses a mix of quick melee strikes, Blackflame projectiles, and devastating area attacks like a prolonged roll or body slam at low health. Strategies for this fight include:

• Using Torrent for mobility and ranged combat.

• Positioning behind the stone obstacles on the bridge to interrupt its rolling attack.

• Maintaining distance and punishing its recovery animations.

Victory awards the Godskin Noble's armor set and grants access to the Divine Tower.

Inside the tower, an elevator ascends to a Site of Grace. At the peak of the stairs beyond lies the summit. Here, players find two critical items: the Stargazer Heirloom Talisman, which boosts Intelligence, and the Cursemark of Death, a key item for completing certain character quests and endings. This culmination makes the arduous journey through the Carian Study Hall—in both its forms—immensely rewarding for dedicated Tarnished. The area stands as a brilliant example of Elden Ring's layered design, where exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving intertwine to reveal profound secrets within the Lands Between.
